Sonoma Coast AVA
A tiny winery in Sonoma County, Young Hagen Wines crafts site-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Founded by Tim and Ali Beranek in 2013, Young Hagen Wines is a small-lot Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer in Sonoma County, California. The husband and wife team brings passion and a unique approach to crafting their ultra boutique wines that are terroir-driven and produced from some of the most distinctive and sought out vineyards in Northern California. With praise from some of the top industry periodicals, Young Hagen Wines is quickly establishing itself among the region's best.
Tim and Ali both grew up in the small farm town of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, where they met in the sixth grade and became close friends. Upon graduating from high school in 1995, Ali went off to the University of Minnesota for a couple of years before transferring to UC Davis. Tim ended up in San Diego, pursuing his passion for golf. After graduating from the Golf Academy of America and playing professionally on developmental tours, Tim worked as a club professional in Minnesota and Southern California. It was while working at these private golf clubs that Tim was exposed to several high end wines through member parties and special events. His interest in wine was immediately piqued, especially after discovering the noble Pinot Noir.
In 2000, Tim and Ali got together for a summer-long backpacking trip through Europe and found that their friendship was really much more than that. They eventually got married, settled in Minneapolis, and now have two sons - their middle names are Young and Hagen.
Over the years, Tim's interest in wine and winemaking continued to grow, and he found himself buying and drinking wines from various world-class winegrowing regions to help expand his knowledge and fine tune his palate. To further his education, Tim enrolled in additional winemaking studies at the University of Minnesota and he completed the prestigious UC Davis Winemaking Certificate program. In 2010, the Beraneks decided to commit to a future in the wine industry and moved to Sebastopol (Sonoma County) where Tim began his first intern position at Kosta Browne Winery.
Tim went on to hold a cellar master position at Outpost Wines, which is situated high atop Howell Mountain in Angwin, California, and in 2013, he and Ali officially started Young Hagen Wines with 2 tons of fruit from Chenoweth Vineyards in Green Valley (Russian River Valley). Young Hagen Wines was on its way!
The following year, Tim and Ali began sourcing fruit from Riddle Vineyard in Occidental, and in 2016 they added some Chardonnay from the Platt Vineyard in Sonoma Coast. In 2017, they added an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir from Morning Dew Ranch. The vineyard sourcing has always been of the utmost importance at Young Hagen Wines and the properties that Tim and Ali have had the opportunity to work with are among the most coveted in Northern California.
In addition to Young Hagen, Tim is also the winemaker at Mending Wall in St. Helena and BYDAND Wines in Windsor. Several of his wines have garnered 90+ ratings from the top industry periodicals, and all of the wines are made in extremely limited quantities.
We hope our Pinot Noir Wine Club members enjoy this award-winning Pinot Noir from Young Hagen Wines. Cheers!
