Edna Valley AVA
A Taste of Spain Right Here in California
Founded in 2000 by Louisa Lindquist, a cutting-edge visionary winemaker and wife to well-known winemaker Bob Lindquist (Lindquist Family Wines, Qupé), Verdad Wines is devoted to making Spanish-style wines that are pure, expressive and balanced, conveying the flavors of unique cool climate vineyard sites on California’s Central Coast. Louisa exclusively selects vineyards with biodynamic, organic, and sustainably certified farming practices, ensuring the best fruit possible makes it into her ultra-boutique bottlings of Verdad wines. Her passion and love for making Spanish-style wines is expressed in every bottle that she produces, and we are happy to share one of her celebrated achievements with our Garagiste Wine Club members.
Louisa Lindquist knew she wanted to be a winemaker at the age of 18. It all started while working at Yosemite State Park, where she would share wine and camping with her group of friends. She immediately fell in love with wine - the taste, the ambiance, and the communal aspect, enjoying that it brought people together and that it had a story. Right then, Louisa knew becoming a winemaker was her destiny.
Louisa then ventured to school in Long Island, New York, where coincidently, there was a budding wine industry. She was able to intern with Hargrave Cellars, the first winery on Long Island, where she pruned grapevines and worked in the winery. She also worked in wine shops and restaurants along the way, where she really got turned on to Spanish varietals - in particular, the vibrant Albariño wines from Rías Biaxes and the bold and complex Tempranillos of Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
In 1990, Louisa moved to San Francisco to work with a wine importer and distributer, and a few years later, she met her husband and well-known California winemaker, Bob Lindquist. He encouraged her to follow her dreams and passion for making Spanish-styled wines in California, and together, they made that dream a reality. Louisa established Verdad Wines (‘Verdad’ means ‘truth’ in Spanish) in 2000 and became the first commercial producer to release Albariño in all of California.
Today, Louisa crafts Albariño, Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha (Grenache), and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes primarily come from two vineyards - the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley, which is organically farmed, and the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in Edna Valley, which is Demeter Certified Biodynamic. The Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard was actually planted by Louisa and her husband and produces beautiful, high quality grapes for both Verdad and Lindquist Family Wines. Verdad wines are made at the Clendenen Lindquist Winery in Santa Maria. We hope you enjoy this special selection from Verdad Wines!
