Vaughn Duffy Wines
Sonoma County region
Their wines show an incredible maturity of style and indicate great promise
Vaughn Duffy Wines is the result of a desire to do something that Matt Duffy and wife Sara Vaughn weren't sure was possible. It all started when the couple was living in San Francisco and Matt was working at Bacchus & Venus, a specialty wine shop and tasting room in Sausalito, California. Matt would often bring home a leftover bottle or two, and he and Sara would enjoy the incredible wines in their tiny apartment. They fell in love with Pinot Noir and dreamed of one day making their own.
In 2007, Matt and Sara moved to Sonoma to start a new life - to get more space, some sun, and to be closer to prime Pinot Noir wine country. Matt took a harvest internship position at Siduri and then landed a job at Vinify, a custom crush facility in Santa Rosa full of people who were living out their own winemaking dreams. It was an ambitious, contagious environment and Matt was exposed to a number of boutique producers and award-winning winemakers who shared their knowledge while encouraging him to pursue his own passion. It wasn't long before he and Sara purchased their first ton of Pinot Noir grapes and Vaughn Duffy Wines became a reality.
The first vintage of Vaughn Duffy was released in 2011 - a tiny 50 cases of 2009 Suacci Vineyard (Russian River Valley) Pinot Noir that rivaled some of the best Pinots in their area.
Each year, Vaughn Duffy's production has grown slightly and currently rounds out at 1,000 cases, a level Matt feels they will stick to for the foreseeable future. In addition to Pinot Noir, Matt and Sara also produce a dry Rosé of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Each of their wines show an incredible maturity of style and indicate great promise for the future of this great new winery.
Since Matt and Sara do not own their own vineyards, they rely on purchasing fruit from nearby vineyards. This gives the couple the opportunity to find new, undiscovered properties, as well as access to working with a number of the region's best growers. Their vineyard sources include Suacci Vineyard, Stori Vineyard, Baker Lane Vineyard, and Hopkins River Ranch, all located within Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast, and the Russian River Valley appellations.
Now in its fifth year, Vaughn Duffy Wines is proving to be an exciting new producer and we look forward to seeing them grow in the coming years. The winery is part of the boom of first-generation winemaking families in California, and with their early success, they are certainly standing out from the crowd. We hope you enjoy this selection for our Pinot Noir Series members. Cheers!
Matt Duffy - Winemaker
When it comes to Pinot Noir, winemaker Matt Duffy enjoys the process as much as the result. Although he has no family history in wine and no formal education in the industry (he has an English Literature degree from UC Berkeley), Matt Duffy is proving himself as a rising star winemaker in Sonoma County.
When he's not working on the "passion project" of Vaughn Duffy, Matt also consults for Easkoot and Baker Lane Vineyards, in addition to working as Cellar Master at Vinify Wine Services where he oversees the production of nearly thirty artisan California wines. With many awards already to his name, Matt Duffy is certainly a winemaker to watch.
