Located on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, Ty Caton Vineyards is a rugged setting ideally situated to grow some of the premier grapes in Sonoma Valley. The vineyards were planted on the site of an old winery that ran consistently from the 1920’s into the 1940’s (through prohibition), and the original winery, crush-pad and house still stand on the property as a testament to the rich wine growing history of the land.
The Caton family purchased the property in 1981 with the intent of someday restoring and expanding the vineyards over the beautiful rolling hills of Sonoma Valley. With neighboring vineyards including some of the most famed producers in California, the Catons saw potential for growing their own world-class grapes and in 1997, Ty Caton began planting 40 acres of vineyards on the family’s land. Ty Caton Vineyards was born! Just three short years later, the first vintage from Ty Caton was released and met with immediate critical acclaim that has continued throughout the years.
Ty Caton personally manages the entire winemaking process at Ty Caton Vineyards, from planting the vines, to farming the grapes, to making the wine. As one of the few exclusively estate producers in Sonoma Valley, Ty has complete control over the growing and winemaking processes and strives to create wines that show the great potential of his family’s certified sustainable vineyard.
If the number of Gold, Double Gold, and Best of Class awards is any indication, Ty Caton has become an excellent winemaker in his own right. Since the beginning, his goal has been to produce bold, highly extracted and beautifully structured wines with a certain “wow factor.” When it comes to his Red Blends, Ty uses master blending techniques to enhance his estate grapes’ natural character and to create wines with many layers of complexity in aroma and flavor.
