Thomas Knoll Winery

Napa Valley AVA

Only produces one small bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon each year

A tiny Cabernet Sauvignon producer in the heart of Napa Valley, Thomas Knoll is the passion project of Sean and Sandy Thomas. The couple fell in love with the beautiful Napa Valley wine country early on, when a serendipitous career opportunity brought them to the region soon after their graduation from UC Berkeley (1983). Their passion for Cabernet Sauvignon soon evolved into a drive to make the very best wine possible and their dream of starting a winery is now being realized through Thomas Knoll.

It all began in 1997 when Sean and Sandy Thomas purchased “Thomas Knoll,” the 4-acre Coombsville property that became their home and, eventually, their estate vineyard. The land was perfect for growing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon (hard volcanic rock soil on a slight slope facing east) and the Thomas’ were fortunate to find Mike Seitz, the perfect vineyard manager to help them through the process. Mike was young and energetic with similar passion and drive, and together with the Thomas’, he identified the ideal Cabernet Sauvignon clone for their winegrowing region. The first vines were planted in 1997 and the Thomas’ were on their way!

Tragically, Mike died in a vineyard accident soon after, but Sean and Sandy Thomas are forever indebted to him for sharing his talent and passion with them and the Thomas Knoll wines are a testament to that.

In 2003, five years after the vines were planted, Sean and Sandy began to take the wine from vineyard to bottle with the help of Steve Reynolds (Reynolds Family Winery) and their three children. Steve had been introduced to the Thomas’ by Mike Seitz and he agreed to assist them with Thomas Knoll, the name Sean and Sandy had chosen for their family winery. Sean also teamed up with Steve Reynolds (and Oscar Renteria and Kristi Seitz) to establish the prestigious ‘Appellations’ series of wines that features high-end blends encompassing every appellation in Napa Valley. The brand has since been acquired by Italics Winegrowers and the Appellations wines are now featured within their portfolio of fine wines.

Thomas Knoll only produces one small bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon each year, with fruit sourced from the Thomas estate vineyard in Coombsville, Napa Valley. We are happy to share the 2014 vintage with our Garagiste Wine Club members.
