Paso Robles AVA
Thacher's award-winning wines and beautiful historic 'KR' barn are quickly putting them on the map
For decades, quarter horses, cattle and cowboys roamed the grassy hills of the historic Kentucky Ranch, a 52-acre property located on the Westside of Paso Robles. Today, the Ranch is home to Thacher Winery, a tiny family-owned operation full of casual charm and reminiscent of California’s past and present. Founded in 2004, Thacher Winery is owned by the husband-wife team of Sherman and Michelle Thacher. The couple met while working for the Los Gatos Brewing Company in northern California, where Sherman once worked as an award-winning brewmaster. He held that position for sixteen years, but after discovering the romance and allure of the wine industry, he knew that was where he belonged.
In 1993, Sherman began crafting wine in the Santa Cruz Mountains, working under the loose tutelage of several distinguished winemakers, including those at David Bruce, Mariani and Savannah-Chanelle. For ten years, he gained valuable experience working with these wineries, but Sherman and Michelle yearned for a property of their own where they could build a winery and turn their dreams into a reality. They set their sights on Paso Robles - its rustic charm, small-town appeal and celebrated wine country seemed like the perfect fit for the Thachers and their growing family.
By happenstance, Sherman and Michelle attended a wedding at the old Kentucky Ranch in 2003 and they were so captivated by the property that when, nine months later, it came on the market, they immediately made an offer. The following year marked the first vintage for Thacher Winery and they were on their way.
The Thachers have since planted a small estate vineyard on their property, but they continue to source fruit from other select vineyards on the Westside of Paso Robles and from Southern Monterey County. Their wines have been blessed with numerous Gold Medals since the first vintage and they continue to grow a loyal following. Although still one of the smaller winery operations in the region, Thacher’s award-winning wines and beautiful event center in the historic ‘KR’ barn are quickly putting them on the map. We are happy to share this latest achievement from Thacher Winery with our Platinum Plus! Wine Club and Gold Plus! Wine Club members. Enjoy!
