Spann Vineyards
Sonoma County region
A sense of purity, authenticity and distinctiveness in every bottle
Peter and Betsy Spann were destined to start a winery. Betsy was a Californian who lived many years in Bordeaux with her family and upon returning to the states, opened her own wine shop, became an independent wine broker, and helped with the startup of Lake Sonoma Winery, working both in the vineyards and in wine production.
Peter’s background was in the restaurant industry, working as a very successful wine buyer for several restaurants before dabbling in wholesale distribution, wine retail, marketing and sales. Together, Peter and Betsy Spann have a wealth of wine industry knowledge and couldn’t resist the opportunity of owning their own vineyard when they moved to Glen Ellen, California.
Their picturesque Spann Vineyards is nestled among the majestic coastal redwoods of the Mayacamas Mountains, planted on a steeply terraced mountainside to small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Sangiovese. Although they initially planned on selling the grapes to neighboring wineries, when the time came, the Spanns took the plunge and decided to make their own wines instead.
Their focus has been on crafting European style wines, strongly influenced by Bordeaux, the Rhône Valley, and Tuscany, with a sense of purity, authenticity and distinctiveness in every bottle. Spann Vineyards has undeniably made their home among the echelons of Sonoma’s ultra boutique wineries, and we are happy to introduce them to you this month. Cheers!
