Validating that Lake County can make world-class, award-winning wines
After two decades of heavy investment and pioneering by a group of ambitious winegrowers, Lake County is re-launching itself with thoughtfully sited vineyards and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities. Although this just-north-of-Napa region has enjoyed a solid reputation for Sauvignon Blanc for a few decades, newer plantings in the high-altitude Red Hills of Lake County are responsible for some head-turning red wines, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. One of Red Hills’ most successful proponents is George Myers, grower and owner of Snows Lake Vineyard who bottles small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Myers began acquiring land there in 1996 and has since assembled 808 acres under vine (600 of which are Cabernet). Most of the Snows Lake grapes are sold to prestigious wineries with national and international acclaim, including Stag’s Leap, Cakebread, and Rosenblum, to name a few. Myers wanted to further prove his vineyard’s merits and held back some of his best 2004 fruit for the production of two limited-production wines, comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Myers simply wanted to validate that Lake County can make world-class Cabernet, and with two multi-award winning wines under his belt, it seems he has proved his point.
