Shannon Ridge Family of Wines
Lake County AVA
A pioneering spirit dedicated to Lake County wines
Clay and Margarita Shannon were destined to one day own a winery. Growing up in California wine country (Clay in the Healdsburg region of Sonoma County and Margarita in St. Helena of Napa County), the two shared an undeniable passion for grape growing and the rustic lifestyle of living outside the city limits.
The couple met working at a winery in Napa Valley and went on to build a vineyard management and development company together for nearby winery estates. They sold fruit to such wineries as Beringer Vineyards and Robert Mondavi, but after some time, the Shannons began to wonder how their grapes would stand up on their own. In the late 1980’s, the Shannons began working with wine grapes from Lake County (just north of Napa and Sonoma) and recognized the area’s potential to grow great mountain fruit. Much of Lake County’s fruit was being purchased by Napa and Sonoma wineries to blend into their own wines, but few producers were making Lake County wines. Clay and Margarita saw this as an opportunity to help showcase the budding region.
In 1995, the Shannons purchased a magnificent Lake County mountain property at an altitude of 2,200 feet and planted their first vineyard to Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The cool lake breezes and rocky volcanic soils helped their mountain vines produce small berries with concentrated flavors and Shannon Ridge Vineyards and Winery was born. Today, the Shannons own and manage several Lake County vineyards, all certified sustainable, and their wines are nationally recognized with countless prestigious honors. Winemaker Mike Wood offers his award-winning talents to the Shannon Ridge brand and is deeply passionate about representing the Lake County region.
The Shannon Ridge team’s pioneering spirit and dedication to Lake County wines is a refreshing reminder to stand for what we are passionate about. Cheers!
