Santa Ynez Valley AVA
While Marco’s winemaking is founded in the style of the Old World, he enjoys intertwining his love of music and art with the flavors of the wine.
Founded in 2014 by good friends Marco Lucchesi and Katie Thompson, Section Wines is a boutique winery in Santa Barbara County that showcases the unique terroir of the region through a distinctive collection of Rhône, Bordeaux and Tuscan-style blends. It is Marco and Katie’s goal to embrace not only the great diversity of soils and vineyards found throughout Santa Barbara County, but also to celebrate Marco’s Tuscan Italian heritage that ultimately led him to become a winemaker. We are happy to share one of Section Wines’ most popular offerings with our Garagiste Wine Club members.
Born in Pisa, Tuscany, Marco Lucchesi was immersed into the wine and food culture at a very young age and it seems he was always destined to become a winemaker. He grew up in a very traditional Italian household where great food and wine was an everyday occurrence, and his parents even owned a small local restaurant where his love affair with wine truly began. His father is also a top Sommelier in Tuscany, who taught Marco the basic foundations of wines and winemaking as he was growing up. Impressively, Marco worked his first harvest at the age of 13!
After earning a business degree in Italy, Marco found his way to California following his dream of making wine. He initially settled in Napa Valley where he enrolled in the Napa Valley College Enology program and later did a number of significant internships at such wineries as Laird, Trefethen Family Vineyards and Judd’s Hill Winery. Eventually, Marco set his sights on Santa Barbara County - he was attracted to the region because of its diversity of soils and vineyards and he knew it was the place to start his passion project of Section Wines. Marco partnered with Katie Thompson, a vineyard owner and dressage rider who happened to hire Marco to consult on her Camarillo estate; when the two were introduced, a perfect partnership blossomed and it eventually led to Section Wines.
While Marco’s winemaking is founded in the style of the Old World, his approach to branding is quite modern and he enjoys intertwining his love of music and art with the flavors of the wine. In fact, the art on the labels is an important aspect of the Section Wines project. Marco and Katie work with both up-and-coming as well as renowned artists and choose pieces that enhance the wine profiles - each wine has a different image of original artwork on the front label. We hope our wine of the month club members enjoy this special selection from Section Wines. Cheers!
