Sadie Family Wines
South Africa
Sadie’s Columella wine is regarded amongst the best red wines from South Africa, each vintage scoring 90 Points or higher since 2000!
Eben Sadie is perhaps South Africa’s most talked-about winemaker, with five wine brands he currently calls his own and a career that spans 14 years. He packs a lot of experience into his professional life, doing two vintages a year, one in South Africa’s Swartland region and one in Priorat, Spain. It’s a journey that has taken him to Germany, Austria, Oregon, France, California, and a few places in between.
Sadie got his start in winemaking in his early twenties, apprenticing with various South African producers before signing on as winemaker for Spice Route Winery in 1998. Not long after, Sadie began experimenting with his own wines, and in 2000 produced his first vintage (just 17 barrels) of a Rhône-style red blend he named Columella. Columella was one of the most important writers on viticulture and vinification in early Rome, and through his work and direction, much of the Syrah plantings made their way through the Rhône Valley. Since the wine was predominantly Syrah, and Sadie has always admired the writer’s work, the Columella name seemed rather fitting.
Today, Sadie’s Columella wine is regarded amongst the best red wines from South Africa, each vintage scoring 90 Points or higher since 2000! We are pleased to present this special selection to our Diamond Series Plus! members this month.
