RN Estate Vineyard
Paso Robles AVA
Balanced, elegant, and restrained - distinctly French in style
Roger Nicolas grew up on his parents’ farm in the remote countryside village of Brittany, France. As a young boy, he dreamed of greater opportunities and in his early twenties made the move to New York City. Roger was interested in the hospitality industry and worked for many years at some of the most prestigious restaurants in the United States (La Grenouille in New York City, The Lodge at Pebble Beach, and L’Etoile in San Francisco). He opened his own restaurant, La Potiniere, in San Francisco, and later gained international acclaim as the founder and owner of The Home Hill country inn and restaurant in New Hampshire.
While working with various restaurants, it was only natural that Roger developed a profound passion for wine, especially those that seamlessly paired with fine foods. Another dream was slowly developing, one that involved finding the perfect piece of land for a vineyard and crafting a wine that would be balanced, elegant, and restrained - distinctly French in style.
In the fall of 2005, Roger founded RN Estate in Paso Robles, California. He loved the Paso Robles AVA for its dry, warm climate that is ideal for producing Bordeaux and Rhône style varietals. His hilltop vineyard, situated high on the western ridge of the Estrella River Valley, also sees great cooling winds in the evening that help the fruit evenly ripen throughout the growing season. For his Burgundian-style wines, Roger sources fruit from the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley where the climate is much cooler to enhance the crisper character of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Today, Roger Nicolas produces just 1,200 cases each year with most of the wines exclusively available through his Paso Robles winery. He enjoys hosting private, intimate, sit-down tastings at his private estate and sharing with visitors the dream behind his namesake label (RN is Roger’s initials). We have secured a few cases of his latest release and hope you enjoy getting to know this great garagiste producer. Cheers!
