While being a micro producer certainly has its challenges, the Gallaghers are having fun in their wine adventure.

A micro-producer based in Santa Maria of Santa Barbara County, Purple Dragon Cellars is owned by husband and wife William and Sheila Gallagher. This ultra-tiny winery only releases about 200 cases total each year, making them one of the smallest wineries we have featured in the Garagiste Wine Club.

Purple Dragon Cellars opened in 2016 with a goal to showcase small lots of handcrafted wines from the Central Coast of California. William and Sheila Gallagher currently offer Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah, all crafted from specific vineyards that best showcase the varietal characteristics. Whether it’s the Tres Niños Vineyard in the Arroyo Grande Valley for Zinfandel or the Jurassic Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley for Old Vine Chenin Blanc, each property is carefully selected by William and Sheila to produce expressive, balanced wines with a true sense of place.

William and Sheila have always been involved with wine. Prior to starting Purple Dragon Cellars, William and Sheila owned a wine shop in Orange County, California, and helped manage wineries along the Central Coast. They finally realized it was a passion they couldn’t ignore and purchased their first ton of grapes in 2016. Thus was the beginning of Purple Dragon Cellars.

The name of the winery is certainly a memorable one and an ode to Sheila’s love of the color purple and their daughter Mckenna’s love of dragons. The couple is quick to point out that the naming of the winery has been the easiest part of the wine business thus far.

While being a micro producer certainly has its challenges, the Gallaghers are having fun in their wine adventure, and like that each barrel they make gets personal attention. This simply does not happen at the larger wineries, and they enjoy having the flexibility as a small producer to change blends and wines whenever they see fit.

Featuring such small wineries as Purple Dragon Cellars and helping them gain exposure is what the Garagiste Wine Club is all about. While they don’t currently have a tasting room, Purple Dragon Cellars will pour tastes for visitors by appointment. We are happy to present their 2019 Zinfandel, a beautiful wine we are sure you will enjoy!
