Launched in 1999 by Paul Sloan and Mat Gustafson, Paul Mathew Vineyards is committed to low-input winemaking, crafting small batches of wine from the Green Valley sub-appellation of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. The Green Valley is the coolest part of the appellation and is world-famous for its sparkling wine, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is here that Paul Mathew Vineyards is quietly releasing some delightful wines that are terroir-driven, food friendly, and without-a-doubt worthy of your attention.

Mat Gustafson’s passion for wine began as a teenager working at his uncle’s wine store in his home state of Michigan. Since that time, he has worked nearly every job in the wine industry, from stocking shelves, becoming a sommelier, working in restaurants, and even in sales. After earning his degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Northwood Institute in Michigan, he moved to Colorado where he held a Sommelier position at the Flagstaff House Restaurant in Boulder. The Flagstaff House is a high-profile restaurant with over 2,000 wines on the list, which gave Mat an amazing opportunity to taste some of the finest wines in the world. It was here that Mat fell in love with Domain Leflaive White Burgundy which later became his model for crafting his own Chardonnay.

After Mat’s time in Colorado, he returned to California where he worked various jobs for Joseph Phelps Vineyards, he became the Wine Buyer and Sommelier at John Ash & Co. in Santa Rosa, and he eventually opened Oakville Grocery in Healdsburg, where he was the Wine Buyer and Assistant Manager. He then worked two years in the cellar at Oakville Ranch Winery, and it was here that Mat decided to take his passion for wine to the next level. Mat began a vineyard development business in western Sonoma County during the heightened grape-planting boom of the late 1990’s and also started making small batches of wine on his own - this was the beginning of Paul Mathew Vineyards.

In 2001, Mat began working at the famed Dutton Estate Winery and was quickly promoted to head winemaker, a position he held while also running Paul Mathew Vineyards. It was around this time that Mat also assumed full control of his winery and began concentrating on Burgundian and Rhône varietals, including Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier. He also makes a Cabernet Franc and Gewürztraminer, and all of the fruit is mindfully sourced from tiny vineyards in the Russian River Valley.

In 2006, Mat’s wife Barb joined Paul Mathew Vineyards after a fifteen-year career with Four Seasons Hotels as a Dining Room Manager and Sommelier. Together, Mat and Barb Gustafson opened a Tasting Room for Paul Mathew Vineyards in downtown Graton where visitors can taste through their award-winning wines. The couple also takes part in several “foodie events” where they enjoy pairing their Paul Mathew wines with delicious and unique dishes.
