Outerbound Wines

Russian River Valley AVA

As vast as it is varied, the North Coast wine region offers rugged terrain and exceptional terroir that excites the 6th generation growers behind Geyserville's new Outerbound Wines.

Established in 2017, North Coast Wine Company (and its inaugural wine brand, Outerbound) was created to forge a new path for the 6th generation growers of the Phillips family in the rugged terrain of the North Coast wine region. 'Outerbound' speaks to the family's love of wine and adventure, as they explore the wide diversity of the North Coast and discover its unique and exciting vineyards that produce wines of exceptional quality. The first Outerbound wines were released in 2021 and have already earned great critical acclaim, marking an impressive start for this new winery venture.

The 6th generation of the Phillips family are the children of brothers Michael and David Phillips, who co-own one of the largest family-owned wineries in Lodi, California - Michael David Winery. Their family farming tradition actually dates back to the 1860's, when the Phillips homesteaded 160 acres near the town of Lodi following the Civil War. Although originally devoted to farming vegetables, the Phillips' farms evolved to include many different fruits and wine grape varietals over the years. Today, the 6th generation growers - the new era of Phillips family winemakers - are banding together and venturing out into new and uncharted territory on California's North Coast.

Outerbound's wines focus specifically around the Sonoma County region of the North Coast and its well-known AVA's of Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, and Alexander Valley. The initial releases included a Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted from some of the area's best vineyards - and the results speak for themselves.

The beautifully intricate Outerbound wine label is also worth mentioning. The family hired a local artist to create wood carvings, and then used the design as a 'stamp' to depict the different regions they source fruit from. The Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet labels are all unique, and if you look closely, you'll notice different foliage and trees, topography, and landmarks - like the bridge over the Russian River Valley on this month's Pinot Noir label. One feature that remains consistent however, is the foil pathway that goes down the center of each label, highlighting the journey of discovery - the residing theme behind Outerbound Wines.

The Phillips family is excited to be spreading their roots and venturing into the North Coast region. Now we implore all of our Pinot Noir Wine Club members to harness your sense of adventure and enjoy this special release from Outerbound Wines. Cheers!

Phillip Dube, Winemaker

Picture of Phillip Dube, Winemaker

The winemaker behind Outerbound's award-winning wines is Phillip Dube, a University of Adelaide alum and former East Coast attorney. It seems Phillip also embodies a sense of exploration into the unknown; after deciding to leave his law career behind to follow his passion for wine, Phillip worked harvests in Australia and South Africa before settling into the wine industry on California's North Coast.

Phillip draws inspiration from the region's diverse terroir, continuing to push the limits of discovery to showcase the incredible wines the North Coast has to offer. His precision and careful preparation have led him to craft beautiful wines that are celebrated vintage after vintage.

In addition to crafting wines for North Coast Wine Company and Outerbound Wines, Phillip is the founder and winemaker of his own brand, Whipsmart Wine Co., in Sonoma County. His free time is spent hiking, running, smoking meat, and enjoying exotic foods.
