A winemaking philosophy of respecting the environment and the grape through passion, care, and connection.
Founded by winemaker Faith Armstrong Foster in 2009, Onward Wines crafts single-vineyard, site-driven wines from expressive vineyard sites throughout Northern California. Many of the words used to describe Faith’s Onward wines could also be used to describe the winemaker herself: honest, vibrant, unfiltered, true to her origins, bright, and complex. Faith also has a strong commitment to the environment and believes that sound and sustainable practices are not only critical for the survival of the wine industry, but they are also the basis for producing wine of the highest quality. It is with this winegrowing philosophy and a passion for winemaking that Faith Armstrong Foster is building Onward Wines into a premier boutique winery in Northern California.
Born on a tiny island in British Columbia, Canada, Faith could hardly have seen her future as a winemaker. She would travel to school in a little boat called the Onward and eventually made her way into marketing and sales in the Canadian boating industry. It wasn’t until Faith took a position in wine promotion, marketing, and sales in California that she discovered her interest in wine and winemaking. The more she learned about wine, the more her interest grew. Her leap into wine production came after spending a day helping out at a winery; she shoveled her first fermenter and was hooked. What followed was a full Regents Scholarship to UC Davis and a degree in Viticulture and Enology with the highest honors in 2006.
After graduation, Faith began working for Frank Family Vineyards in Napa Valley, where she was soon promoted to Enologist, and then Assistant Winemaker. Here, she was involved with making several different wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, sparkling wine, and Port.
In 2009, Faith decided to purchase her own grapes from a Mendocino grower whose practices she admired, and Onward Wines was officially launched. The name for the winery pays homage to her unusual childhood and the name of the little boat in which she went to school in every day. The name also references her natural approach to winemaking, honoring the history and authenticity of the grape and the vineyard site, as well as her winemaking philosophy - respecting the environment and the grape through passion, care, and connection. Faith currently crafts Pinot Noir, Carignan, Malvasia Bianca, Zinfandel, and Syrah, all in very limited quantities. She resides in Napa Valley with her husband, Sean Foster (also a winemaker), and their four children.
We are happy to share Onward Wines with our Garagiste Wine Club members. Cheers!
