Located in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County, Odonata Wines is Old World-rooted and sustainably-driven when crafting their premium, small-batch wines from local growers.

Odonata Wines is a small family winery that is owned and operated by winemaker Denis Hoey. Located on the California coast within the Monterey Bay area, Odonata Wines produces small batches of wine with a focus on local grapes that are either organically or sustainably grown. Since the inaugural vintage in 2005, Denis has worked closely with local growers to ensure the highest quality grapes are selected for his carefully crafted, small-lot wines, and he’s seen great success along the way.

A Sacramento native, Denis grew up in a wine-centric family who appreciated fine wines and it exposed him early on to a wide range of varietals and styles. Becoming a winemaker, however, was nowhere near on his radar until after graduating college in 2004. Denis attended UC Santa Cruz and earned a degree in business management and actually planned to become a firefighter at one point. Fate intervened though when Denis met Jeff Emery, the owner and winemaker at Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard who offered Denis a part-time job helping around the winery. It wasn’t long before Denis had an epiphany moment and realized the wine business was where he wanted to be.

Denis became the production manager at Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard and also an apprentice under Jeff, where he learned all of the in’s and out’s of winemaking. It was also under his guidance that Denis launched his own wine label in 2005, Odonata Wines. Odonata, by the way, is an order of insects that includes dragonflies and damselflies - which is why you’ll find the dragonfly has become the winery’s logo. Denis’ tiny first release of Petite Sirah came a few years later, and the varietal continues to be one of his staples at the winery.

Over the years, Odonata Wines grew quite naturally and Denis moved winery operations as needed to keep up with the growing demand. 2014 marked a big year though, when Denis and his wife Claire purchased the Marilyn Remark Winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands and transformed the space to become Odonata Wines’ home. Their property includes a 2-acre vineyard, production facility, tasting room, and a welcoming patio where visitors can enjoy Odonata’s wide range of quality wines.

Denis continues to advance his winemaking knowledge and techniques and believes that blending Old World methods and attitudes with modern improvements gives him the best of both worlds. He has three estate vineyards: Falcon Hill in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Pinot Noir), Machado Creek in the Santa Clara Valley (Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Sangiovese), and the estate vineyard at Odonata Winery in Santa Lucia Highlands where he grows Viognier. He looks forward to sharing the fruits of his labor with you. Cheers!
