Clarissa Nagy, a passionate young winemaker
The person behind Nagy Wines is Clarissa Nagy, a passionate young winemaker with an affinity for the Central Coast and a love for the vineyards that are planted there. After graduating from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with a Food Science degree, Clarissa found herself working at Edna Valley Vineyards in the cellar and lab in 1995. She worked her way through the Central Coast over the next ten years and spent time gaining winemaking experience at Firestone Vineyard, Curtis Winery, Byron Vineyard and Winery, Longoria Wines, Rancho Arroyo Grande Winery, and Bonaccorsi Wine Company. Over the course of her career, Clarissa has been blessed to work with some amazing vineyards in Santa Barbara County, and it’s no wonder the region has captured her heart.
While working at Byron, Clarissa met her winemaking match and life-long partner, Jonathan Nagy. They were married in 2003 and decided an appropriate wedding favor for their guests would be a bottle of wine they made themselves. They made a barrel of White Hawk Vineyard Viognier and this unknowingly started Clarissa on the path to making her own wine label.
Clarissa Nagy had been keeping her eye on Santa Maria Valley’s Garey Ranch Vineyard where Byron had done extensive research for the perfect clonal and rootstock combinations. In 2004, some of the fruit became available and Clarissa made a small amount of Garey Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir. The following year, this wine became her first commercial release under Nagy Wines. She continues to source fruit from the exact block, and this year will celebrate her 10th vintage of Gary Ranch Pinot. Clarissa is also back to making the wine that started it all - a White Hawk Vineyard Viognier that continually proves to be one of her best efforts. We wish Clarissa Nagy the best of luck in growing her ultra-boutique label and know her pursuit of the Central Coast is long from over. We are excited to offer this superb wine to our Garagiste Series Wine Club members. Cheers!
