Extraordinary talents and unwavering passion
Quite possibly the biggest Grenache fanatic in California, Peter Mathis is the passionate owner, grower and winemaker for Mathis Wines – Sonoma Valley’s ultra boutique wine label that focuses whole heartedly on this distinctively fruity and spicy southern Rhône varietal. Peter’s hillside vineyard is planted to just 7.5 acres of mostly Grenache with tiny blocks of Petite Sirah, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet blended in to round out this traditional Southern Rhône field blend-styled site.
Peter got the wine bug back in the late 1980’s while he was making furniture and living in Western Massachusetts. One day in 1990, he packed up an old school bus, headed out west, and landed a job at Ravenswood Winery.
He’s been a part of the Ravenswood Winery family ever since, working first in winemaking and more recently as a general manager. While serving as head winemaker, Peter perfected his craft but still yearned to focus on his one true love – Grenache. The wines of the south of France had always piqued Peter’s interest, and it ultimately became his life’s mission to capture the delicious aspect of these Grenache-based wines in California. In 1997, his dream began to take shape as he bought his own beautiful hillside vineyard property in Sonoma Valley, which he then cultivated and planted himself by 2000.
Today, Peter Mathis splits his time between Ravenswood and his namesake Mathis Wines, which celebrated its inaugural vintage in 2004. Peter crafts just two wines for his tiny winery, a Grenache made in the traditional southern France field blend style, and a new extremely limited production dry Rose de Carignane. His wines have been incredibly well received by the wine press, a testament to his extraordinary talents and unwavering passion for his winemaking craft. The rest of the story is found in the bottle!
