Luminous Hills Vineyard

Willamette Valley AVA

A unique high-elevation vineyard site offering a thoughtfully crafted range of Pinot Noirs that beautifully capture the distinct character of this special wine growing region.

Located in the southwestern corner of the Yamhill-Carlton District of Oregon's Willamette Valley, Luminous Hills Vineyard is a unique high-elevation site that is dedicated to producing premium Pinot Noir. Since 2008, Owner/Winemaker Byron Dooley has been committed to the highest level of care and stewardship of this special property, farming sustainably, earning the LIVE certification, and the Salmon Safe designation for his efforts. The resulting Luminous Hills wines are complex, beautifully balanced, and thoughtfully characteristic of this prized Oregon wine growing region.

Byron Dooley's passion for wine began in college at Oregon State University, when he and his wife Dana were first introduced to wine through wine tasting excursions in nearby regions. Although he pursued a career in technology, Byron's love of wine continued to grow and he and Dana would often embark on vacations around the world on a quest to find fine wine and further their knowledge of European winemaking techniques.

"As our interest in wine increased over the years, more of our activities started to revolve around trying different wines in different settings, in wine tasting groups, conducting wine dinners, and of course, traveling to different wine regions, primarily in France and Italy," Byron explained.

It wasn't until several years in 2000, that the Dooleys decided to follow their passion and join the wine industry. They sold their home in San Francisco and moved to a 140-year-old farmhouse in Napa Valley's Howell Mountain appellation while Byron went back to school at Napa Valley College to earn his degree in viticulture and winemaking. Byron also interned at the well-respected Williams Selyem Winery and planted a small vineyard to Bordeaux-style varietals from which he made his own Napa Valley wine for a couple of vintages. In 2004, after graduating, the Dooleys began looking for their next step and found what they were searching for in Oregon's Willamette Valley - where they first fell in love with wine so many years ago. They located a special property in the Yamhill-Carlton District and developed a small 12-acre vineyard planted to Pinot Noir, which they named Luminous Hills. Their inaugural vintage from Luminous Hills came four years later in 2008.

Around the same time, Byron also began contracting with select growers in the Willamette and Columbia Valleys, and created a separate portfolio of limited-production wines that reflect the distinct characteristics of several sub-appellations' terroir. These wines are grouped together under a sister label to Luminous Hills Vineyard, which Byron named Seven of Hearts Wine. The Luminous Hills Vineyard brand represents the Pinot Noirs he exclusively crafts from the Luminous Hills site.

In Carlton, Oregon, Byron operates a joint tasting room for his Luminous Hills and Seven of Hearts wines. He is determined to make wines that he loves and to share his passion and enthusiasm with others. The tasting room also shares a space with Byron's wife's business, Honest Chocolates, which sells traditional-style chocolates.

The Dooley couple is completely happy with their boutique winery and chocolate business and the success they have seen thus far; they are settled in a place that they love, doing what they love, and things couldn't be better. We are happy to share this special family winery from Oregon's Willamette Valley with our Pinot Noir Wine Club members. Enjoy!
