Longfellow Wine Company

Napa Valley AVA

Extremely small production, very limited distribution

Longfellow Wine Company was founded in 2000 by two childhood friends, Mark Smith and Craig Whitney, with the goal of producing high quality, single vineyard wines from Napa Valley and its surrounding regions. The ultra-boutique winery is best known for its small-lot Cabernet Sauvignons from the Coombsville AVA, just east of the town of Napa.

Mark and Craig trace their roots back to Maryland, where they grew up in the neighborhood of Longfellow in Baltimore. They both attended the University of South Carolina and spent a memorable spring break trip in Napa Valley that sparked their initial interest in wine. After going their separate ways for graduate school, Mark and Craig both ended up in Northern California and in close proximity to wine country. They spent countless weekends visiting local wineries and learning about California wines and finally decided to start a winery of their own. Longfellow Wine Company, named for their hometown in Maryland, was born in 2000. Their inaugural vintage was crafted the following year.

Mark and Craig are joined by renowned California winemaker Rolando Herrera, who started his winemaking career at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as their cellar master. He also gained valuable experience at Château Potelle, Vine Cliff Winery, and Paul Hobbs Consulting before establishing his own label, Mi Sueño Winery. Many of Rolando’s wines have been served at White House State Dinners, which is a great honor and testament to his hard work and exceptional winemaking skills. Rolando shares Mark and Craig’s singular goal of only producing extraordinary wines of unique character.

Now in its sixteenth year, Longfellow Wine Company remains a small, under-the-radar label that produces less than 1,500 cases per year. The wines are available for tasting at the Vintner’s Collective, a select group of boutique vintners who share a tasting room in downtown Napa.
