Joyce Wine Co.
Second-generation winemaker Russell Joyce follows his passion to craft small-batch Monterey County wines with a fresh perspective on the coastal terroir.
It all began in 1984 when Francis Joyce, an ex-professional race car driver, moved to Carmel Valley and purchased a small property with the intent of planting a vineyard. Francis had grown up in a farming family in Wisconsin and after leaving his racing career behind, yearned to be connected to the earth yet again. He followed his passion for wine and planted 4-acres of wine grapes on the steep hillside behind his family’s home - and that chance planting turned out to be just the beginning. Today, the Joyce family owns and operates the successful Joyce Wine Company, crafting artisan, award-winning wines that showcase the natural tension and energy that come from Monterey County’s unique coastal terroir.
Russell Joyce, Francis’ son, grew up working amongst the vines on his family’s small estate vineyard and when the winery was established in 1992, lent a hand racking barrels, hand bottling, and hand labeling for the fledgling new brand. He learned from his father’s work ethic and it instilled in him his own passion for wine and lifelong pursuit to tell the story of Monterey County wine through honest, balanced, and expressive bottlings. Joyce Wine Company became a father-son team, and when Russell entered his twenties, began taking over all winemaking duties.
In 2010, Russell stepped up the Joyce wine production and moved operations to an industrial winery setting in south Salinas. It was during this time that Russell met his now wife, Charlotte, and the third generation of Joyce family winemakers was born when they had their son. Over the next decade, the winery also established a tasting room in the heart of Carmel Valley Village that became known for its comfortable atmosphere, quality wines, and lively parties.
In 2021, Joyce Wine Company expanded yet again, moving out of the industrial winery with the purchase of the historic Ventana Winery in the Arroyo Seco AVA of Monterey. Here, the Joyce family renovated and transformed an old barn into the new Joyce Estate Winery, offering a second tasting room location and winery production facilities to support the growing brand.
All of the Joyce Wine Company wines are made in limited quantities and represent Russell’s passion of telling the story of Monterey County. The family prides themselves in harvesting locally-grown organic fruit from the original Joyce Vineyard Estate as well as working closely with trusted Monterey County growers who focus on innovation and sustainability. With a number of microclimates in the Monterey area, the Joyce family has the opportunity to share the great diversity this unique coastal region has to offer and currently produces a range of varietals including Albariño, Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Grenache, among others.
We are pleased to share this passionate, small family winery with our monthly wine club members. Please enjoy!
