Héroe Wines is a new brand that honors not only the vineyard workers of the family winery, but also pays respect to the unsung heroes of the wine industry.

A sister label to the boutique Sculpterra Winery in Paso Robles, California, Héroe Wines is a new brand that honors not only the vineyard workers of the family winery, but also pays respect to the unsung heroes of the wine industry throughout the region and beyond. Vineyard workers truly are the heroes behind many of today's wineries, working toiling long days in all kinds of weather, all to help grow beautiful, hand-manicured fruit that will result in expressive, premium quality wines.

The owners of Sculpterra Winery and Héroe Wines are Dr. Warren Frankel, his wife Kathy, and their son, Paul Frankel, who is also the winemaker behind the two brands. Their story begins in 1979 when Warren, Kathy, and their three young children moved to Paso Robles from the San Fernando Valley. They had a vision for a simpler life and wanted to raise their children in the countryside. After purchasing a breathtaking property in the Linne Valley of Paso Robles - a 265-acre ranch to be exact - they discovered it was a perfect setting for growing wine grapes.

The Frankel family first planted 20 acres of pistachios on the ranch, followed by 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After initial success with both bottlings, Dr. Frankel expanded the vineyard operation with more Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Merlot. Their most recent additions include Cabernet Franc, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, and Viognier, all of which flourish in the Paso Robles wine growing region.

For the first ten years or so, the Frankel family did not make any wine and simply sold their fruit to other acclaimed wineries in the region. However, once Paul Frankel earned his Wine and Viticulture degree from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, he teamed up with his father to establish Sculpterra Winery - and he would eventually become the entity's winemaker.

In 2006, the Frankel family broke ground on the winery and opened for business in 2007. Today, the stunning property includes a winery and tasting room with a world-class sculpture garden, all surrounded by estate vineyards and dotted with amazing 100 year-old oak trees.

The inspiration for the Héroe brand came in 2011, when Sculpterra's finest and hardest working vineyard laborer, Uga Zatarian, retired and moved home to Mexico. A photograph of Uga is featured on the front label of Héroe's wine bottles, which pay tribute to him as well as all the workers who continue to go above and beyond to help grow and make the best wines imaginable.

Proceeds from Héroe are donated to the Gold Coast Chapter of The Flying Samaritans, a volunteer organization that operates free medical clinics in Baja California, Mexico. We are happy to share this award-winning wine, with such an inspiring story and mission behind it with our Gold Plus! Wine Club members. Please enjoy!
