Filipponi Ranch Cellars
Central Coast AVA
Exceptional small batches of vineyard-reflective wines
When Swiss immigrant Lorenzo Filipponi came to America over 100 years ago, it was not with the intention of joining the wine industry; he was simply motivated by a dream for a better life. He ended up at a 300-acre lot in California that he purchased and turned into a dairy farm called Filipponi Ranch. Lorenzo eventually passed on Filipponi Ranch to his son Herb, and soon enough Herb found himself with a dream of his own – to open a boutique winery.
Filipponi Ranch is located in San Luis Obispo, a charming town tucked between the Coastal Range and Pacific Ocean and right in the middle of Central Coast Wine Country. Since the beginning, Filipponi Ranch has been focused on producing small lot wines of the highest quality. Their grapes are hand-harvested from some of the finest vineyards in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County, and every bottle of wine is crafted in Lorenzo Filipponi's original dairy barn.
Winemaker Peter Cron met the Filipponi family in the early 1990s. He had just left his own family's winery operation, which specialized in small lots of single vineyard wines. Peter and Herb shared an appreciation and an innate understanding that great wine is made in the vineyard, which made their partnership effortless. Their first release in 2008 was a modest 120 cases, made mostly for family and friends.
Today, Filipponi Ranch has grown to produce about 1,200 cases annually. The team is busy renovating the home that Herb grew up in and turning it into the Ranch's very first tasting room, the opening of which will likely double their production over the next couple of years. Interestingly, they are also the gracious hosts of the Central Coast's Annual Shakespeare Festival. As longtime supporters of the performing arts, the Filipponi family enjoys providing a suitable performance venue for the festival and any other groups in need.
It is our great honor to showcase a winery that is not only dedicated to crafting exceptional small batches of vineyard-reflective wines, but also one that is committed to engaging their local community at large. Cheers!
