Deodoro Cellars
Central Coast AVA
A tiny winery with an annual production of just 400 cases
Founded in 2007 by college friends Bob Fuller and Steve Haskins, Deodoro Cellars is nestled in the rolling hills of western Paso Robles where it shares a winemaking and tasting room facility with Starr Ranch Vineyard and Winery.
Deodoro focuses on red wines and blends, sourcing fruit from select Paso Robles vineyards. The name of the winery, Deodoro, comes from the Latin word for God (Deo) and the Spanish word for ‘Gold’ (Oro), thus meaning ‘God of Gold.’
Bob Fuller, the winemaker for Deodoro Cellars, grew up in Pasadena and graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from UCSD in 1985. He went on to become a tour guide, specializing in Mexico, Alaska, and Canada before his wine epiphany occurred, in of all places, Sweden. His travels also took him to New Zealand and Australia, where he fell in love with their Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, respectively. Bob decided to go back to school for viticulture and enology at Lincoln University (New Zealand) and after earning a degree in 2001, moved to California’s Central Coast where he settled as a winemaker for Starr Ranch. He is still winemaker there today. Bob and Steve Haskins became friends while running an auto repair and restoration business together while at UCSD. Circumstances and distance naturally separated the two after college, as Bob cultivated his travel guide career and Steve went on to become a real estate and business attorney in San Diego. It wasn’t until 2004 (more than twenty years later) that a chance encounter in San Luis Obispo brought the two friends together again. They decided their next endeavor would be starting a winery together on the Central Coast and Deodoro Cellars was born.
The winery is tiny, with an annual production of just 400 cases spread between seven different wines. Deodoro owns no vineyards, which gives Bob flexibility to respond when superior fruit from new sites becomes available. His wines are distinctive with uncommon personality and truly represent his talent and passion as a winemaker. Enjoy!
