Coda Wines - SLYD Wines

Santa Barbara County region

A rising star capturing the brilliance of the Santa Ynez Valley

Although officially founded in 2013, the passion behind SLYD Wines (originally named ‘Coda Wines’) began when owner/winemaker Spencer Daley was just sixteen years old and living in Camarillo, California. His dad had planted a few rows of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon in the backyard, and using a small basket press and trash bins as fermenters, the two of them would make small batches of wine together. Spencer grew to love the winemaking process at this early age, in its most simplistic form, and it instilled in him a drive to one day do it professionally.

Once Spencer was of legal age, he began working at a local winery in downtown Santa Barbara where he spent time in the cellar and in the vineyard. He fell in love with the vineyard and began his own vineyard management company that year (at age 21!). He managed three vineyards, about eight acres in total, during that first year. The following year, in 2013, Spencer moved to Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez and continued his quest in vineyard management. He was also given the opportunity to make wine with the fruit he cared for, and that harvest he crafted his first bottling for SLYD Wines. His original name for the winery, Coda, was chosen to represent his other great passion in life - music (a coda, by definition, refers to a phrase in a musical piece). Spencer has played guitar, drums, and bass for most of his life, so when he started this label, he knew that he wanted to connect his two great loves. He has also stuck to the theme by naming each individual wine as another piece of music, or a musical term in general. The name of Spencer’s winery recently changed to ‘SLYD’ (pronounced ‘slide,’ and refers to a portion or structure in a musical piece).

Today, Spencer crafts limited amounts of Syrah, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, all from vineyards located within Santa Barbara County on California’s Central Coast. Through his boutique collection of wines, he hopes to capture the brilliance of the Santa Ynez Valley and the amazing vineyards and farmers who make the area so unique. We hope you enjoy this excellent feature for our Garagiste Wine Club from this rising star winemaker. Cheers!
