Heintz's wines are truly handcrafted from grower to winemaker and represent the best of what Heintz Vineyard has to offer
Founded in 2004 by third generation farmer Charles Heintz, the Charles Heintz Vineyards & Winery is an ultra-boutique, premium winery featuring Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from the Heintz Ranch in Sonoma Coast. The 55-acre vineyard is planted just six miles from the Pacific Ocean in the renowned Green Valley sub-appellation of Sonoma Coast’s Russian River Valley, where cool climate loving varietals truly thrive. It is here that the Heintz family gently and sustainably farms their world-class fruit and crafts it into some absolutely beautiful wines.
The Heintz Ranch has been owned by the Heintz family since 1912, and over the many decades the family has grown a wide variety of crops including berries, cherries, apples, and other vegetables. The family first planted Zinfandel on the property in the early 1900’s, but during Prohibition, the grapevines were removed and replaced with apple orchards.
It wasn’t until 1982 that grapevines were planted once again on Heintz Ranch, and this time to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. About eight acres of apple orchards still remain on the Heintz Ranch today. Charles Heintz took over farming operations at Heintz Ranch in 1984 and he prides himself on continually learning new techniques and keeping up with the latest tools and innovations. Because the family wines are produced in small lots, they receive the utmost care and attention, which is reflected in the taste, color, and aroma of the Heintz wines. Charles painstakingly manages all aspects of farming the 55 acres of vineyards including operations and personally overseeing the winemaking process. Consulting winemaker and family friend Hugh Chappelle has been with the winery since the 2012 vintage and he brings a great attention to detail that comes through beautifully in the finished wines.
The wines from Heintz Ranch are very special due to the unique terroir of the property. The Ranch is located in a valley, six miles west of the Bodega Bay coastline and surrounded by beautiful old Redwoods. Because of the varied terrain, the Heintz Ranch has a range of microclimates which fosters a perfect environment for growing the family’s award-winning grapes. The fruit that isn’t reserved for the Heintz family wines is sold and under contract to several high-end wineries in Sonoma and Napa, including Moone Tsai, Williams Selyem, Flowers, Realm Cellars, Littorai, and Landmark.
Charles’ Heintz’s wines are truly handcrafted from grower to winemaker and represent the best of what Heintz Vineyard has to offer. We are happy to share this passionate producer with our Garagiste Wine Club members. Cheers!
