Bucher Wines

Russian River Valley AVA

Offering estate-grown Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, Bucher Wines is a boutique, family-owned winery and dairy striving to produce the best agricultural crops possible.

A family-owned dairy, farm, vineyard, and winery, Bucher Wines is one of the more unique operations in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. The property is owned by John and Denise Bucher who, with the help of their five children, successfully care for 700 cows while also growing and producing premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With a lengthy farming tradition and history, the Bucher family looks forward to sharing their experiences, products, and ethical farming practices with you.

Located in the Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley near Healdsburg, Bucher Farms has been in John Bucher’s family for over 60 years and is where he spent his childhood growing up. After graduating from UC Davis in 1984, John returned to Healdsburg to manage the family dairy operation, and eventually transitioned the herd to an organic dairy farm. It is also one of the first dairies to be awarded for its humane treatment of animals.

Over the years, John has continued his parents’ path of growing the dairy herd and today’s 700 milk cows are all descendants of the original 50 cows that started the operation. He also found opportunities to diversify to higher-value crops, and one of these projects included planting wine grape varietals on the property. After researching wine grapes, analyzing the farm’s soils, and speaking with neighboring grape growers, John planted the first Bucher Vineyard Pinot Noir blocks in 1997. Over the following ten years, he planted additional blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and today farms 38-acres of certified sustainable vineyard land.

2011 marked the first harvest for Bucher Wines, which focuses on limited-production, estate-grown, Burgundian-style varietals sourced exclusively from the family farm. The vineyard’s location on the acclaimed Russian River Valley’s West Side Road is prime wine country for cool-climate loving grapes like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, thanks to the nearby Petaluma Gap which funnels in cool air, sea breezes and fog directly from the Pacific Ocean. Bucher’s grapes are also sold to several notable Sonoma County wineries including Williams Selyem, Siduri Wines, Papapietro Perry, Kosta Brown, C. Donatiello, and others.

Winemaker for Bucher Wines is Adam Lee, known as one of California’s premier Pinot Noir producers. In addition to starting Siduri Wines with its cult-following of premium Pinot Noirs, Adam also crafts wine for his own label, Clarice Wine Company (several of which are rated over 95 Points). He has been with Bucher Wines since the inaugural vintage and has crafted countless award-winning wines for the family winery.
