One of the best-known family-run wineries in Langhorne Creek, South Australia, Bremerton Wines offers premium-quality, authentic wines from this historic and celebrated winegrowing region.
Owned by the Willson family, Bremerton Wines prides itself on its history and utilizing the best organic and sustainable practices to create wines of only the highest caliber. The winery is nestled in the heart of South Australia’s famed Langhorne Creek region, where it has built an awardwinning reputation for excellence - including being named a James Halliday 5 Star Rated Winery for the past seventeen years straight. This ranks Bremerton among the top 5% of all Australian wineries - an impressive feat to say the least.
Craig and Mignonne Willson planted their first vineyard in 1991 and their love of winemaking quickly blossomed into a healthy business - producing an annual level of 35,000 cases of wine just eight years later. In 2004, the Willson’s daughters, Rebecca and Lucy, took over management of the vineyards and winery, after training at one of the top global universities for winemaking and viticulture: The Univeristy of Adelaide. Today, Bremerton Wines focuses on specialized farming practices, with the underlying goal of assisting vines in producing grapes of intense color and flavor.
The winery’s location in Langhorne Creek is also advantageous in helping to achieve this goal. Situated on an ancient flood plain forged by the Angas and Bremer rivers, this land was once bulging with water cascading from the Mount Lofty Ranges. In the 19th century, a system of levees and floodgates were developed to catch and divert the water, while also introducing nutrient-rich silt to the area - which still enriches the region’s vineyards today. Langhorne Creek has become especially known for is bright, fruit-forward wines that display wonderfully fresh acidity.
As Bremerton Wines grew over the years, the vineyard plantings and winery space followed suit. The winery was recently renovated to include a new cellar door space that adjoins Bremerton’s historic 1866 barn, which has served as the original tasting room and cellar door since its beginnings. Throughout this newly remodeled space, there are many structural pieces that have been re-purposed, such as a recycled timber arbor which was made of wood from the former replica HMS Buffalo ship at Glenelg - a nod to the Willson family ancestors who came to Australia on the original ship.
With the Willson sisters’ passion and dedication, Bremerton Wines has become of the best known wineries in Langhorne Creek, with numerous accolades and high ratings given over the years. We are proud to share one of their esteemed offerings with our wine club members this month. Enjoy!
