Bodega de Edgar
Central Coast AVA
A family-oriented operation striving to make the best possible wines
When Edgar Torres’ parents arrived in the Central Coast town of Cambria in 1987, they became immediately aware of the possibilities the wine industry offered and the prospects that lay ahead for their family. Edgar came along a few years later and embraced his family’s passion for work and love for the wine industry.
Edgar Torres, who was born in the village of Buenavista near Morelia in Michoacan, Mexico, worked several jobs in the food industry once moving to California’s Central Coast. Eventually through the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort & Restaurant in Sam Simeon, he made the acquaintance of a number of winemakers and winery owners. He managed to get his first real job as a cellar rat and eventually worked just about every winery job imaginable. In 2005, he dropped out of school to follow his passion into the wine industry on a full time basis. He continued his on-the-job education until he believed he knew enough about the business to try it on his own. Encouraged by his friends and having maintained a real fervor for the grape, Torres and his wife, Krissy, founded Bodega de Edgar in 2007.
Bodega de Edgar started small at under 250 cases, and it has grown steadily to its current production level of roughly 3,500 cases, with a focus on Spanish varietals (Syrah, Grenache, Albariño, Torrontés and Tempranillo). The grapes are sourced from some of the highest quality vineyards on the Central Coast.
For the record, ‘Bodega’ is a Spanish term for wine cellar and Edgar Torres is profoundly dedicated to his Spanish heritage, as well as the pursuit of great Spanish wines. “I have always loved Spanish wines,” remarked Edgar Torres, “and I strive to make the best possible wines. We have long term contracts for our fruit and I love the fact that these grapes have distinctive characteristics.” Edgar’s wines have garnered several awards from top industry periodicals and state competitions, making his small-lot wines even more desirable and harder to find.
Torres and his wife Krissy work in the winery and Torres’ younger brother Jaime and his sister Maria also help out around Bodega de Edgar. His father, Alfonso Torres, can also be found around the winery and lends his formidable expertise to the family oriented operation.
Today, Edgar Torres is considered Paso Robles’ first Mexican-American winemaker and his story is truly one of inspiration - showing the value of hard work, ambition, and enthusiastically chasing after your dream. His namesake winery is located on Turley Court in Paso Robles and is accompanied by a tasting room off 46 East in the same town.
