Santa Cruz Mountains AVA
Continuing a deeply-rooted family tradition of grape growing in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Beauregard Vineyards crafts site-driven wines that express the region's distinctively different coastal-mountain terroir.
With a family grape-growing tradition going back 76 years and four generations, Beauregard Vineyards was established in 2000 in the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Here, up a twisting road that rises from the Pacific Coast Highway, nestled amongst the majestic redwoods, the father-son duo of Jim and Ryan Beauregard are growing stellar fruit from one of the heritage vineyard sites of California and crafting award-winning wines that beautifully express the region's unique coastal mountain terroir.
The history of Beauregard Vineyards began in 1945 when Amos Beauregard, a retired Sheriff Deputy (and Ryan Beauregard's great grandfather), purchased 157 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The property, which was originally planted in the 1880's by the Quistorf family, included 13 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and an old grape known as Charbono. Amos Beauregard named the estate Beauregard Ranch and farmed the grapevines until his final days.
The property was passed down to Amos' son, Emmit (Bud) Beauregard, who farmed the family ranch and also established the Shopper's Corner Grocery Store in Santa Cruz. The small-town grocery store is a landmark in Santa Cruz and is still owned and managed by the Beauregard family today.
Emmit's son, Jim Beauregard, also took to farming at a very young age, spending summers on the property and working in the vineyard with his father and grandfather. In 1980, Jim pulled out the existing century-old vines that weren't producing fruit, and replanted with Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir.
Jim Beauregard was continuing his family's farming legacy, but he took it a step farther when he worked to establish the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA in 1988. He recognized that the wines of this region had their own distinct qualities that set them apart from the rest of the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation. The uniquely cool climate in this area, which encompasses the town of Bonny Doon and the Beauregard estate vineyards, lends itself to wines that have complete flavor development and evolution, vineyards with rich soils and diversified microclimates, and an overall feeling of rustic, land-focused viticulture.
Over the years, Jim has planted hundreds of acres of vines throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains and has become an expert on clonal selections. His 62 acres (which today includes Beauregard Ranch, Coast Grade Estate, and Bald Mountain Estate) produce some of the finest fruit in the state of California.
In 2000, Jim and his son Ryan founded Beauregard Vineyards. Ryan grew up on the Beauregard Ranch and played as a child among the vines, just like his father had. The farming lifestyle and mechanics of grape-growing and winemaking were ingrained in him from the get-go, and it seemed destined that he would continue the family's tradition. After dabbling in home winemaking, Ryan was hooked, and he yearned to share the terroir of his family vineyards with wine lovers around the world.
Ryan produced the first vintage for Beauregard Vineyards in 2000, when he was just 23 years old. Today, he is one of the seasoned winemakers in the Santa Cruz Mountains, producing highly-rated wines year after year from his family's prized coastal mountain fruit. Using an Old-World winemaking approach and minimalist techniques, he prides himself on crafting terroir-driven and varietally correct wines that are expressive and well-balanced. Over the years, Beauregard Vineyards has become best known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Beauregard Vineyards' wines can be tasted at the winery's historic tasting room in the coastal redwood community of Bonny Doon. Here, the Beauregard family's 65 acres of estate vines, a stunning redwood bar, and beautiful winery grounds create one of the most unique wine tasting experiences in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
We are excited to share one of Beauregard's creations with our Pinot Noir Wine Club members. Enjoy!
