Ascension Cellars is an ultra-boutique winery specializing in limited production, barrel select Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines from the Central Coast of California. Founded in 2010 by friends Erick Allen and Brian Sauls, Ascension Cellars is the quest to craft “wine that matters”…wines with elegance, body and grace that stimulate the senses and express the distinctive character of Central Coast vineyards. Their overall production is very small (under 1,000 cases) and the wines are therefore very hard to find, even in the Central Coast region.
Erick Allen and Brian Sauls both live in Orange County, California and have long shared their passion for premium wine. By day, Erick is an award-winning interior designer and remodeling contractor, while Brian works in finance as a private financial planner. The friends would often get together and share glasses of wine, and while they enjoyed many “good” bottles, they were always on the quest for something better. This lead Erick to start experimenting with home winemaking and before long, this weekend hobby grew into something much more. In 2010, Ascension Cellars became a reality. The name was inspired by their quest for the best, and their winery’s motto fittingly became Elevate your Senses.
The fruit for Ascension Cellars is sourced primarily from Cass Vineyard in Paso Robles, with small amounts also from Frankel Vineyard and Miracles Ranch. All of the wines are made by Erick Allen at the Cass Vineyard and Winery facility. Erick and Brian selected Cass Vineyard because they were both inspired by the estate’s focus on low yield, premium quality fruit, as well as the impeccable care of their vineyards. Erick and Brian are thrilled to be following their passion for wine and spend as much time as possible on the Central Coast and in the winery.
