Founded in 2013 in Napa Valley, California, Apriori Cellar is a collaboration between Patrice Breton and Georges Sabongui, two very passionate, focused and driven vintners whose shared winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in balance and terroir. Working together, it is Patrice and Geroges’ goal to showcase the pure qualities of their grapes and the distinctive personalities of their vineyards and the regions from which they are from. Apriori Cellar currently crafts limited amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Petit Verdot from a handful of vineyards in Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Mendocino County, and the Santa Cruz Mountains, offering wines with an excellent quality-to price ratio.

Patrice Breton and Georges Sabongui originally met while attending high school in Ottawa, Ontario, and although the two friends lost contact with each other after parting ways to separate universities, they interestingly both became involved in the high tech industry upon graduating. After twenty five years of no contact, the two Canadian boys reunited their friendship when they found one another on LinkedIn and realized they were both living in California - with an affinity for fine wines. Patrice had already made the leap into the wine industry, starting Napa-based Vice Versa Wines in 2003, and Georges was interested in investing in a winery or vineyards. They decided to join together as business partners and start Apriori Cellar in 2013 with Patrice directing all production operations and Georges managing sales, marketing and administration. Their first release came in 2014.

The winery’s name, which means ‘deductive reasoning’ in Latin, is an homage to Patrice and Georges’ heritage - ‘Apriori’ is a term often used in French speaking parts of Canada.

Since the beginning, it has been their goal to create wines that are both reasonably priced yet over-deliver on quality. They produce two different collections of wines - an appellation series and a single vineyard series, both of which are limited in production and focused on terroir.

Patrice and Georges are also joined by Philippe Melka, a legendary consulting winemaker with a history working for such reputable wineries as Bordeaux’s Chateau Haut Brion, the Dominus Estate in Yountville, Badio O Coltibuono in Chianti, Chittering Estate in Australia, and Château Petrus in France. This globetrotting wine consultant has been trained and influenced by some of the most notable personalities in the wine business, and since 1994 has been in Napa Valley full-time, serving as a consultant for some of the region’s most highly regarded properties. His connections to world-class vineyards and highly desirable grapes also makes him an incredible addition to the Apriori Cellar team.
