(Merlot pronunciation: Mehr-loh)

Merlot is a red wine variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the southwest of France. In fact, the first mention of this grape being made into wine was in the late 1700s when a French winemaker in the Bordeaux region labeled the grape as an ingredient in his Bordeaux wine blend. The red grape grows well with higher alcohol content in the warm climates it has rooted in, like Australia, California, and Chile.

This easy drinking, full body, popular red wine is similar to a Cabernet Sauvignon, but is softer and less tannic, with lower acidity. An early ripening variety, Merlot gives a round fruit character, soft tannins and a supple texture to the wine, contributing lively fruit characteristics and aromas of red cherries, raspberries and blueberries.

On the palate, Merlot offers flavors of ripe cherry and chocolate flavors, combined with a fleshy texture. Winemakers from the northern tip of Oregon, Napa Valley, the Central Coast of California to the southern borders of Chile produced incredible Merlots. At Gold Medal Wine Club we strive to bring our wine club members only the best of the best Merlots available.

When drinking a Merlot there is a wide variety of food pairings. Some include, pizza, barbecue chicken, roast turkey, braised meats, lamb, veal, filet mignon, and ratatouille.

We offer a large variety of fantastic Merlot wines in our monthly wine subscription club. Cheers!
