McLaren Vale

Australia

This premier growing area is located about 20 miles from Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is blessed by a Mediterranean climate that permits four distinct seasons highlighted by long warm days and short, cool nights. Little rain falls between December and April, providing a near perfect environment for growing and maturing grapes.

Relatively thin soils are important in McLaren Vale. Fertile red-brown earths are combined with several soft sands and a mixture of darker, hard clays. More than 120 wineries are located in McLaren Vale, almost all of which are the boutique or small family-type.

The region was first planted around 1840 and is headed by the wonderful Shiraz varietal that represents more than 50% of the area’s total grape production. McLaren Vales wines are renowned for their elegance and are frequently compared to French reds.
