Marin County AVA
This tiny wine appellation claims about 200 acres, some of which spill over into the 3 million+ acres consumed by the greater North Coast AVA. While Marin County is not a huge name in the wine industry, there are roughly 14 wineries dedicated to growing note-worthy wines in this region.
Marin County is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and, in turn, is an ideal location for growing some very memorable wines. The proximity to the ocean helps moderate temperatures with cooler summers and warmer winters compared to the bordering North Coast AVA. Similarly to the coastal AVAs to the South of Marin County, such as San Luis Obispo, the growing season is much longer here than inland regions, sometimes wineries wait to harvest until late October. This allows the grapes to mature on the vine longer without the fear of increasing sugar levels.
Due to the cooler temperatures in the North, Marin County winegrowers can expect exquisite and light-bodied wines that are typically lower in alcohol and express bolder mineral flavors. The climate and soils in this region create an excellent environment for growing Pinot Noirs. Although this region grows more Pinot Noir than any other varietal, there are a few others that made the cut such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot and Gewürztraminer.
Willowbrook Cellars, Bailiwick Wines, and Dutton-Goldfield Winery are a few of the wineries producing spectacular wines from this region. Our monthly Wine Club members have enjoyed wines from this list of wineries and should expect more from them and/or their neighbors in future shipments.
