Italy
Italy is one of the world’s largest wine producers with more than 1.5 million acres under vine. Italy also claims some of the world’s oldest wine producing regions with vineyards going back as far as 2nd century B.C.. Viticulture was introduced by Greek colonists into Sicily and southern Italy with large-scale plantations soon following in many coastal areas. The country produces a tremendous amount of table wine, vermouth and cooking wines, like Marsala, as well as high quality drinking wines.
The three top producing premium wine regions are Veneto, Tuscany and Piedmont. Other notable wine regions are Emilla-Romagna, Lombardy, Umbria, Abruzzo, Trentino Alto-Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Marche, and Puglia. There are a number of smaller regions such as Lazio, Sicily, Sardinia, Campania, Liguria, Calabria, Moslise, Basilcata and Valle d’ Aosta.
Wines produced in Italy are designated by four basic categories (from best to most generic) Vini DOP, Vini IGP, Vini Varietali, Vini. Today, vineyards of all sizes can be found in almost all regions of the country with over 350 official Italian wine varieties. To have a taste of Italy join our International Wine Club. We are starting 2016 off featuring fine wines from Italy. "Ciao bella!"
