Dry Creek Valley AVA
Sonoma, North Coast
Dry Creek Valley AVA, with over 9,000 vineyard acres, is located in the famous wine growing region of Sonoma County, California just northwest of the town of Healdsburg. The area is about 16 miles long and two miles wide and is formed by Dry Creek, an offshoot of the Russian River. This wine growing region got its start at the turn of the 20th Century, then converted much of its agriculture to plum, pear and prune trees during the Prohibition years. When the 1970’s rolled around, the area again reclaimed its grape growing heritage.
The Old Vine Zinfandel was the cornerstone along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Today there are over 50 wineries in the Dry Creek Valley including parts of the giant E&J Gallo Winery as well as an abundance of small family owned vineyards. This is a rural wine region with a few tasting rooms, a general store a couple of lodging options. Visitors to the area who wish to sample the wine offerings tend to find their lodging and meals in the town of Healdsburg. We have featured numerous 90+ rated wine in various wine clubs over the years, with more to follow.
