Calaveras County AVA
Calaveras County, Sierra Foothills
The Calaveras County AVA is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains in north-eastern California about 100 miles from San Francisco Bay. While the area is a long way from the cooling influence of the pacific, so it has warm daytime temperatures, it does receive cool winds off the mountains at night. This temperature variation, leads to a longer growing season and grapes that are rich and complex.
The grapes most commonly grown here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Calaveras County was ground zero for the California Gold Rush of 1850 and thus became one of the original counties in California. The large flow of immigrants into the area, led to the first planting of vineyards.
Today the Calaveras wine industry is doing well with a mix of boutique and commercial vineyards calling the area home. Most of the vineyards in the region are located in the hilly terrain close to the town of Murphys.
For those who want to sample the region’s wine offerings the majority of tasting rooms are located within walking distance of each other on Murphy’s historic Main Street, or you can visit our Wine Store and search for wines we have featured in the past. There is no doubt we will be featuring more award-winning wines from this out of the way wine region in our future wine club shipments.
