Anderson Valley AVA

Mendocino, North Coast

Tucked away in California’s Mendocino County is the Anderson Valley AVA. Just 10 or so miles from the Pacific Ocean, the appellation cuts through the coastal range giving it a wide range of high and low temperatures. The result of temperature swings that can be as much as 50 degrees, are grapes with a balanced sugar and acid content. The area is known for its outstanding Pinot Noir as well as superb Alsace-style white wines made from Gewurztraminer and Riesling and Muscat.

Visitors to the area have made the Valley’s Alsace Varietals Festival a popular winter tradition. Another rising star for Anderson Valley, is their sparkling wine. A handful of methode champenoise sparkling wine producers, Iron Horse Vineyards for one, are building quite a buzz for their bubbly.

Today there are over 40 vineyards with over 500 acres planted, and a number of wineries with tasting rooms. In addition to the wine lovers who have discovered Anderson, winemakers in Napa and Sonoma have grown quite fond of the area’s Pinot and have for the last 20 or so years been regularly sourcing the region’s grapes for their own wines.
