Alexander Valley AVA
Sonoma, North Coast
Just north of the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County, California, lies the Alexander Valley AVA. The area is the most planted wine region in Sonoma with many top wineries calling this area home. The picturesque valley with the Russian River flowing through it was named after prominent settler Cyrus Alexander, who came to the area in 1847. In 1984 the area was given its AVA status. Sheltered from the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean, Alexander Valley is one of the warmest growing regions in Northern California.
The daytime heat and cool evenings makes it a perfect location to grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In the higher elevations above the Valley floor, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc hold their own. Other varietals you will fine in the area include Old Vine Zinfandel and Grenache. What started off as an area more associated with Jug Wines has in more recent years moved toward more premium wines. While the mood of the area is laid back, the 40+ wineries in the area have a reputation for producing rich drinkable, highly acclaimed, award-winning wines.
Wines from the Alexander Valley AVA have been featured in our Gold, Garagiste and Diamond Wine Clubs. Keep an eye out for more from this highly-acclaimed region.
