White Blend

White

The term White Blend is an umbrella category for white grape blends that are not based on a standard regional composition. Winemakers blend grapes for a variety of reasons: to add complexity, multiple flavors and aromas and to create balance. The goal is to by combining fruit, acid, tannin, alcohol and color to bring out the best in a wine.

An example of a popular White Blend is White Bordeaux which combines Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The resulting offering is zesty, light in color with hints of gooseberry and melon. Another popular White Blend is White Rhône Blend featuring Marsanne, Roussanne, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, and Viognier. This is a full bodied wine with flavors of cream, apple, lemon curd and parmesan cheese. Another popular combination is Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon which tends to produce a wine with aromas of honey, lemon and flowers and a light spicy flavor.

For lovers of sparkling wine a well received White Blend called Cava combines Macabeu, Parellada, Xarello and Chardonnay to create a refreshing sparkler with notes of white peach and lemon. White blends are the winemakers choice, matching his pallet to the taste of the wine they create. We feature more white wines in the summer than any other time of the year. Our Gold Wine Club has had a fair share of white blends over the years.
