Tempranillo is an almost black grape widely grown in Spain to make full-bodied red. It is the main grape used in the Rioja wine region, and is often referred to as Spain's "noble grape". Its name is the diminutive of temprano ("early") in Spanish. Tempranillo ripens several weeks earlier than most red grapes in Spain. The wines are ruby red in color, with aromas and flavors of berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather and herb. In the last 100 years Tempranillo vines been planted throughout Portugal, in South America, here in the United States, South Africa and Australia.
Tempranillo Reserva reds are aged 3 years with 1 year in oak. These wines are a big step up in quality and have rich, round flavor because of the minimum oak requirement. Gran Reserva Reserved for wines from phenomenal vintages. Aged a minimum of 5 years before release with 18 months of oak aging. Most producers will do 20-30 months in barrel. We have featured both the Reserva and the Gran Reserva Tempranillo in our International Wine Club and in our 90+ rated Platinum Wine Club.
