Tannat

Tannat is a red wine grape that originally was found in the Basque region of France near Spain. It is distinguished by its very high tannin content and it has traditionally been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet franc to help make the wine a bit more approachable.

Outside of France, the grape has found a welcoming home in Uruguay, where planting has been increasing every year. Since the late 19th century, the grape has also shown some promise for wineries in Central and Northern California where it has been produced as either a blended or single stand alone varietal.

Tannat wine is often described as having black cherry, plum and chocolate flavor notes with a warm raspberry jam aroma. It is a wine that ages well and goes very well with meats and other hearty dishes. Gold Medal Wine Club featured the Rock Wall 2011 Tannat from Sonoma that won a Double Gold Medal from the San Francisco Wine Competition.
