Pinotage is a red wine grape that is South Africa's signature variety. Pinotage was created in South Africa in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. It is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. It typically produces deep red varietal wines with bramble and earthy flavors, sometimes with notes of bananas and tropical fruit. Almost always a deep, dark color, it can be an easy-drinking wine with upfront wild berry flavors, or it can lean towards smoky, musty undertones with firmer tannins.
Well-made Pinotage wines range considerably in style, from easy-drinking table wines to dense, concentrated wines that have some aging abilities. We have featured Pinotage in our International Wine Club for our members to experience this fantastic wine.
