The Van Ruiten 2001 Old Vine Zin spent an unusually lengthy 22 months in oak and is produced in a more classic French-style. This delectable wine is just now starting the wine competition circuit and we predict a bin full of medals by summer’s end (even the heralded 2000 Cab-Shiraz started out with a few Silver medals.)
The 2001 growing season saw a cooler summer and temperate ripening prior to harvest in October. This allowed a very long hang-time, resulting in a dense, flavorful wine. “Deep hues and aromas of black cherries are complimented by flavors of roasted coffee, anise and clove. The wine’s full body and lengthy finish suggest pairing with veal, venison or chili.” 100% Zinfandel.

Lamb Ragout on Whole Wheat Pasta
The seasoning on the sauce is more Middle Eastern than Italian. The sweetness of the roasted peppers, mint, cinnamon and allspice intensify the juiciness of the wine. You can serve the sauce over regular pasta, but the dish is best when made with whole-wheat pasta or buckwheat, if you can find it.

Cellar Rat Cioppino
The Cellar Rat Cioppino is a traditional Italian dish from the Hambrecht Family kitchen with much thanks to Alison Rosenblum. On Tuesdays during harvest, the cellar staff ends the day together with a big pot of stew and a few bottles of wine.
