Walter Schug’s legendary winemaking career and accomplishments have been well documented since the early 1970’s when the German-born wine guru served as the founding winemaker of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. While at Phelps, Schug made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-style blend as well as the first varietal Syrah wine in the United States. When Phelps decided to end their production of Pinot Noir (Schug’s favorite varietal), Schug began making his own wine on the side and by 1983, Schug Carneros Estate Winery was born. Schug and his wife Gertrude chose the cool, marine climate of Carneros for their family winery due to their mutual love of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and over the years, have won countless awards and ratings for their spectacular Burgundian-style wines.
Schug’s 2019 Rosé of Pinot Noir comes from the Sonoma Coast’s famed Ricci Vineyard. Crafted in the German style, this delicate Rosé is refreshingly light and dry with vibrant acidity and inviting flavors of strawberry, watermelon and peach. It is a reminder of the great versatility that Pinot Noir has to offer.
