Although extremely popular in its homeland of Italy, the Barbera grape varietal has only recently gained ground in California. Best known for its deep color, intense, fresh aromas, and low tannins, Barbera grows extremely well in the Sierra Foothills region, and especially the Cardanini Vineyards from which this wine is from. The soils here are volcanic and naturally acidic which gives this Barbera its minerality and refreshing acidity.
On the nose, aromas of sweet cherry and hints of herbal essence are framed by raspberry and a sprinkling of an interesting tarry earthiness. The palate is rich and luscious with bold cherry and mountain blackberry flavors and a pinch of vanilla. The finish is all cherry, lingering long into the next sip. What sets this Barbera apart from other California Barberas is the wonderful freshness of the wine coupled with the luxuriously soft tannins.
