Paso Robles has a long established reputation for producing premium Rhône-style wines, and for good reason. The grape-growing conditions in Paso Robles are incredibly similar to those in the southern Rhône Valley, so it isn’t surprising that several of the Rhône varietals are thriving in this Central Coast region. Paso Robles even became the focal point in the ‘Rhône Ranger’ movement, which championed the potential for Rhône varieties (Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, among others) in California. Opolo’s 2014 Syrah opens with rich aromas of black plum, leather and tobacco. Rich and complex, the palate is full-bodied and bursting with dark fruit flavors that linger on the long finish. This wine pairs well with red meat or roasted duck.
