Sangiovese is the most widely planted grape variety in central Italy. There and in Mendocino it produces a fruity, robust red wine with great acidity. The San Francisco Chronicle says this wine is “one of the top 100 wines for 2000,” their tasting notes show, “ripe cherry-berry flavors, moderate tannins, hint of spice; good texture, smooth finish.” This flavorful 1997 Sangiovese from Monte Volpe also earned a solid 88-point rating from Wine Enthusiast magazine, “ . . . just enough mint, herb and oak aromatics and extracted plummy fruit to qualify as pure Cal-Ital. A big wine at 14.5% [alcohol] it’s got a nice black-cherry core and it stands up solidly to garlic-laden foods.” WineToday.com says “4 out of 5 stars,” “black cherry and rose petal aromas; complex, balanced, vibrant; flavors of black cherry, cocoa powder; long finish.” Enjoy this wine with grilled steaks, pastawith forest mushroom sauce and lamb chops with rosemary sauce.
